Journalist’s Family Uninformed About Detention Status

In an interview with the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, a source close to the family of detained journalist and political activist Farid Salavati said the family has no information about Salavati. “Since the afternoon of 12 June, when security forces stormed Farid’s home and arrested him, we have no information about him. All we know is that he was transferred to Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan,” the source said.

Hunger Strikers Tell Families They Will Pay Any Price Until Situation Changes

The twelve prisoners inside Evin Prison’s Ward 350, who have been on hunger strike for two days protesting the deaths of Hoda Saber and Haleh Sahabi, told their families that they will continue their strike until there is conditions change. The wives of two of the prisoners, Feyzollah Arab Sorkhi and Emad Behavar, provided some information to the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran.

Shirin Ebadi Says Deaths of Political Prisoners is Systematic

In an interview with the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, Noble Peace Prize Laureate Shirin Ebadi discussed the hunger strike embarked on by 12 political prisoners in protest of the death of Hoda Saber. Ebadi told the Campaign that the deaths of Iranian political prisoners is systematic, and that the Iranian government has caused the deaths of many political prisoners over the years. “The demands of the hunger strikers are logical and yet simple demands–to identify and hold accountable the individual who caused Hoda Saber’s death. The individual is known and some political prisoners testify that he even told them his name. Also, [they demand that] those who caused the death of Haleh Sahabi must be arrested and tried in a fair trial, where people are allowed to be present, so that the facts are known. These are their demands. Delivering these demands are the Islamic Republic’s responsibility on principle,” Ebadi said.

Imprisoned Journalist Hengameh Shahidi on Medical Leave

An informed source told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that journalist and political activist Hengameh Shahidi has been allowed medical leave for the first time in eight months. Shahidi was among the journalists and activists arrested after the disputed 2009 presidential election, and the only female journalist who is currently serving her prison sentence. Shahidi was sentenced to six years in prison and so far she has served close to one-third of her sentence.

UN Working Groups tells Iran ‘Release Kiarash Kamrani’: Will Officials Ignore the High-Ranking Body?

On 8 June 2011, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention determined that Kiarash Kamrani’s detention in Iran is “arbitrary detention.” The Working Group urged the Iranian government to take the necessary steps to remedy the situation, including the immediate release of Kamrani and adequate reparation to him.

Shocking Confidential Report Admits to Iranian TV’s Provocation of Post-Election Uprising

The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran has obtained an exclusive copy of a confidential report prepared by a sub-division of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), in which the IRIB’s performance following the 2009 presidential election is seriously criticized and the network is held responsible for widespread protests arising from the announcement of the election results. The confidential report is dated 9 August 2009.

“Gross Negligence, Rulers Wanted Him Dead,” Says Hoda Saber’s Former Cellmate

Reza Alijani, a former cellmate of Hoda Saber (above), described to the Campaign the extent of torture and abuse Saber was under and the denial of medical attention that led to his death.

In an interview with the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, political activist Reza Alijani, talked about his former cellmate Hoda Saber and his death. “All the evidence shows that the rulers and security apparatus wanted him to die,” Alijani told the Campaign. “I see Hoda’s death as an invisible execution and a type of threat against others on hunger strike, that if they continue their strike, they will face death,” he said, referencing the negligence of prison authorities that resulted in Saber’s death.

After Writing Letter Detailing Torture and Abuse, Abdollah Momeni Denied Basic Prisoner Rights

Student activist Abdollah Momeni has been repeatedly denied rights to furlough and family visits after writing a letter addressed to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, detailing torture, abuse, and ill-treatment in prison. In an interview with the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, activist Abdollah Momeni’s wife, Fatemeh Adinehvand, expressed concern about Momeni’s physical condition. “Mr. Momeni suffers from backache and has a heart condition. Since last week, he has been transferred to the prison infirmary twice. He received painkiller injections twice in order to relieve his back pain. He needs treatment outside the prison, but prison officials do not pay any attention to our requests for granting him furlough,” Adinehvand said.

Flashmob on Two Year Anniversary of Election Crackdown Highlights Continued Abuses in Iran

On 12 June 2011, to mark two years since Iran’s disputed election, the grassroots movements United4Iran and Move4Iran coordinated a flash mob in a Paris metro station to draw attention to the ongoing human rights abuses Iran’s citizens continue to face. The flashmob’s intent was to highlight sustained international support for Iranians, to encourage individuals worldwide to recommit support for Iran’s civil rights movement, and to show sustained support for the Iranian people.

Student Activist Ashkan Zahabian Remains in Solitary Confinement

A source close to the case of student activist Ashkan Zahabian told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that the prisoner of conscience recently met with his parents while under security supervision. Due to the presence of security forces, Zahabian did not discuss his charges with his parents. Zahabian’s parents surmised from his statements, however, that his interrogations are complete.
