Leading Writers Association PEN International Condemns Sotoudeh’s Sentence and Calls for Action

On 13 January 2001, the Writers in Prison Committee of PEN International condemned the eleven-year sentence of human rights defender Nasrin Sotoudeh issued by an Iranian court on 9 January 2010. PEN also called upon individuals everywhere to take action by writing Iranian leaders to call for Sotoudeh’s unconditional and immediate release.

Sotoudeh’s Husband Says She Is Deprived From Legal Career For Life

Reza Khandan, husband of human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh who was sentenced to 11 years in prison this week, told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that the 20-year ban on Sotoudeh’s legal activities will commence when her prison term ends. Therefore, considering Sotoudeh is in her late 40s, if the sentence is upheld by the appeals court she will be deprived from her legal career for the rest of her life.

Three Days of Crippling Cold in Nazanin Khosravani’s Cell

Azam Afsharian, mother of Iranian journalist and prisoner of conscience Nazanin Khosravani, told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that her daughter’s trial has been postponed until 31 January. Afsharian also said Khosravani’s defense lawyer has been unable to review her case so far and that though more than a month has passed since the completion of investigations, authorities refuse to release Khosravani on bail.

Imprisoned Female Student Activists Denied Visitation Rights Again

In an interview with the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, Mehdi Lalipour, husband of imprisoned student activist and member of the Right to Education Council, Mahdieh Golroo, said that starting this week, both Golroo and Bahareh Hedayat have been barred from having visitors in Evin Prison. After a whole month of being deprived the right to have visitors Golroo and Hedayat were allowed to visit with their families through booths last week, but were once again barred from visits through a new order from the Prosecutor.

Journalist Kaveh Kermanshahi’s Trial Ended

The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran has learned that the second and last trial session of journalist and human rights activist Kaveh Ghassemi Kermanshahi was held this morning in Branch One of Kermanshah’s Revolutionary Courts with Judge Moradi presiding.

Latest News About Prisoner of Conscience Mohammad Nourizad

Fatemeh Maleki, wife of prisoner of conscience Mohammad Nourizad, spoke with the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran about her first in-person visit with her husband after a two-month ban on visitations. “Last Tuesday we had an in-person visit with Mr. Nourizad. Thank God he was well. But his toothache problem persists. When he had a furlough six months ago, the dentist planned for a six-month treatment for him, but, unfortunately, he had to return to prison again and his condition got worse there. Fortunately, we heard that he had one tooth pulled on Saturday. Of course we had hoped that the problem with his teeth would have been addressed a lot sooner. Now they have promised to treat his teeth in prison, and we hope this would happen,” she said.

Tabriz Political Prisoners Threatened After Hunger Strike

An informed source told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that two political prisoners from the province of Azerbaijan, Dr. Latif Hassani and Ayat Mehrali Beigloo are under threats from prison authorities for additional limitations and harsher treatment. Both prisoners have gone on hunger strike inside the Special Ward of Tabriz Prison since 1 January.

Imprisoned Journalist–70 Days In Prison, One Phone Call, One Visit

A source close to the case of imprisoned journalist, Nazanin Khosravani, told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that despite claims that she is charged with “acting against national security,” during her only meeting with her family, she told them that she has not accepted the charge as she has not done anything to warrant such an accusation.

Degrading Treatment Of Zia Nabavi And His Family During Prison Visit

A human rights activist close to Zia Nabavi, a prisoner of conscience, told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that prison authorities at Karoun Prison in Ahvaz stopped an in-person visitation between Nabavi and his family who had traveled for 20 hours to see him, forcing them to visit through a booth, after conducting a degrading body search on Nabavi.

Top Iranian Lawyer Unjustly Sentenced to 11 years in Prison

(9 January 2011) The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran
called the 11-year prison sentence of leading human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh a “gross miscarriage of justice” and said that it should be overturned by an appeals court.
Sotoudeh was sentenced to 11 years in jail, and banned from practicing law and traveling for 20 years. The judge sentenced her to five years in prison on charge of “acting against national security,” another five years for “not wearing hejab (Islamic dress) during a videotaped message,” and one year for “propaganda against the regime.”
