The world condemns stoning in Iran

The campaign to save Sakineh Ashtiani puts the Tehran regime under pressure – Five people have been executed for adultery since 2002, despite the treaty with EU

Sakineh Ashtiani -a 43 years old Iranian woman- is accused of adultery. Her life hangs in the balance. Although the Iranian Embassy in London said she would not be stoned, Tehran has not confirmed this information as of yesterday. The international community has expressed its outrage against this barbaric practice within the Iranian Penal Code. Despite the moratorium on the use of stoning for adulterers agreed with the European Union in 2002, Iran executed at least 5 people since then. Human rights activists denounced Iran’s extensive use of the death penalty, even for homosexuals and minors.

Mahboubeh Karami Denied Bail Despite Poor Health

In an interview with the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, the brother of Mahboubeh Karami, a women’s rights activist and member of the One Million Signatures Campaign described his sister’s conditions. Mohsen Karami said that his sister’s physical and psychological conditions in prison are not favorable, and that judicial authorities have denied her application for release on bail.

Mohammad Davari Remains In Security Ward; Pressure To Extract Confessions Continues

A source has told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that Mohammad Davari, chief editor of the Saham News website, remains in Evin Prison’s Security Ward after several months. Authorities have avoided transferring him to the General Ward. According to this source, Davari has been under intense pressure during his incarceration for a television interview and false confession.

Possibility of Family Forgiveness for Mohammad Reza Haddadi after Ebadi Talks to Kin

Mohammad Reza Haddadi is in danger of imminent execution in Iran for a murder that took place when he was 15 years old. Following an interview with Haddadi’s father, the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran contacted Mehdi Rahmat, one of three sons of Mohammad Bagher Rahmat, the murder victim, to seek his opinion about the execution. Rahmat, who was savagely murdered in 2003, was survived by three sons: Mehdi Rahmat, a computer analyst, Hossein Rahmat, a pharmacist, and Mohammad Rahmat, an attorney.

This is the “Weekly Rights Podcast” a review of major human rights issues by the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran…It’s July 8th and this our third weekly pod cast.
Adultery is a capital offence in Iran – punishable by death by stoning. This week Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani faces such an end. The 43-year old awaits execution, convicted in 2006 of adultery. Medical Care Intentionally Denied to Prisoners

(7 July 2010) Iranian authorities are victimizing prisoners of conscience by subjecting them to dangerously unhealthy prison conditions and refusing them medical treatment when they become ill, the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran reported today.

“Iran is targeting prisoners of conscience by subjecting them to overcrowding, disease, inadequate accommodations, insanitary conditions, malnutrition, and lack of access to medical care,” said Hadi Ghaemi, spokesperson for the Campaign.

Narges Mohammadi, Deputy Director of the Defenders of Human Rights Center, detained on 10 June 2010, was hospitalized following her recent release.

Tajik’s Sister: “Even The Prosecutor Didn’t Know Why And By Whom He Was Arrested And Where He Is Kept”

Abdolreza Tajik, Journalist and human rights activist, has been in detention since June 12 2010.

In an interview with the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, Parvin Tajik, the sister of imprisoned journalist Abdulreza Tajik, said that ever since 12 June when her brother was arrested, there has not been any news of where he was arrested, the reason for his arrest, or what condition he is in now. She was optimistic to see her brother soon, after meeting with Tehran’s Prosecutor.

“He Won’t Be Released Until He Has Learned His Lesson,” While Unionist’s Health Deteriorates

In an interview with the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, the wife of imprisoned teacher, Hashem Khastar said that her husband is in critical health conditions at Evin. Hashem Khastar’s two-year prison sentence was recently issued at an appeals court. His wife told the Campaign that as a result of damage to his right retina, Khastar’s vision has been severely impaired. She said the authorities told her that the reason her husband is not released is that “he has not learned his lesson yet.”
