Kurdish Citizen Shot Dead by Police

Iranian police have shot and killed a Kurdish man from Shandereh village in the Sardasht area of West Azerbaijan Province. Ribvar Nosrati (Shanderehi) was instantly killed when he was shot by a police officer.

Women Prisoners: Maryam Zia Released, Eghdamdoust Gets New Case

Women’s and children’s rights activist Maryam Zia was released after three months in prison, after going on a hunger strike and being taken to the prison hospital. Zia’s sister confirmed her release, telling the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that Zia’s condition deteriorated during her 13-day hunger strike and a judge agreed to release her.

Concern about Moharebeh Charges against members of the Committee of Human Rights Reporters

Committee of Human Rights Reporters is an Iranian civil society organization which has faced immense pressure through arrests of its members after the June 2009 Iranian presidential elections. Iranian security and judicial authorities are currently posing very serious charges against this group and there is concern that some of the organization’s members might face heretics (“moharebeh”) charges. Members of the organization told International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that the stated charges are unfounded and only waged to stop this young civil organization.

Maryam Zia’s sister: My sister has been on a hunger strike

Maryam Zia has begun a hunger strike to protest her illegal imprisonment. A a women’s and children’s rights activist and the Director of the Struggle for a World Deserving of Children, Zia has been detained in Evin Prison since December 27, 2009, following the widespread arrests of civil and political activists that took place during Ashura Day.

900 Iranian Activists Sign Letter for Omid Montazeri’s Release

More than 900 social and political activists have signed a statement, demanding the unconditional release and fair trial of Omid Montazeri. The activists have expressed: “Issuing such a heavy sentence for a young man who has written about his society’s cultural and social issues within the framework of the law, abandoning the “innocent until proven guilty” principle and objectivity in treating this suspect, and denying him his legal rights during the trial process are not only against the law, but in total defiance of justice and fairness.

Hassan Lahooti’s Release: Eavesdropping on Critics’ Phone Conversations Revealed

Following the arrest of Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani’s grandson and Faezeh Hashemi’s son, Hassan Lahooti, Iranian Judiciary authorities have asked him questions which explicitly demonstrate that Iranian intelligence organizations are eavesdropping on phone calls made by Iranian citizens. This indicates that Iranian judicial authorities are taking people’s private conversations as admissible evidence for criminal conduct.

45 Iranian Artists Demand Release of Filmmakers: Is Ill-Treatment, Coercion, and Imprisonment the Only Way?

More than 45 famous Iranian filmmakers, actors, and authors have demanded the releases of Mohammad Nourizad and Jafar Panahi. In their letter they state: “We, the undersigned, support the rights of all filmmakers who are able to make films now and in the future, and the rights to freedom of expression and professional creativity for all, and the right to protest violations of social, professional, and citizen’s rights for all at this time and into the future, and demand the unconditional release of Mohammad Nourizad and Jafar Panahi and all who have been arrested for the above. Isn’t the New Year a good time for reconsidering the ways in which people have been treated and changing things for the best? Is ill-treatment, coercion, and imprisonment the only way? Can’t things be corrected in keeping with the natural, legal, and professional needs of people? Instead of intensifying an atmosphere of death, fear, and disappointment, cannot a happy, creative, hopeful, and vibrant society be created? Happy New Year.”

Abdolreza Ghanbari, Another Ashura Protester, Receives Death Sentence

Abdolreza Ghanbari, accused of enmity against God (moharebeh) for participation in Ashura protests, has been sentenced to death by Judge Salavati. The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran has been informed that Ghanbari did not have access to a fair trial or to select an attorney for his defense.
