Life of Mousavi’s Brother-in Law in Danger

Shapour Kazemi

(19 August 2009) The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran expressed its serious concerns for the life of Shapour Kazemi, brother of Zahra Rahnevard and Mir Hossein Mousavi’s brother-in law. Kazemi, 62, is an engineer who was detained shortly after the contested 12 June elections. He has been held without charge or access to legal counsel. According to his mother and children he had no prior political background and did not participate in any activities relating to Mousavi’s candidacy. The Campaign called for Kazemi’s immediate release.

Child Executions: New Book Argues for Abolishing Child Executions Based on Islamic and International Law

(Cairo, 18 August 2009) The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI), in collaboration with the International Campaign For Human Rights In Iran, has published an Arabic translation of “Child Executions, A Study of Roots and Proposed Intellectual And Jurisprudential Solutions,” by Iranian human rights defender and winner of the 2009 Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights, Emad Baghi.

Baghi presents comprehensive research on child executions, a punishment that is still inflicted in a few Islamic countries.

Torture and Ill-Treatment Systematic, Not Result of “Negligence” and “Carelessness”

(10 August 2009) While Iranian authorities have claimed that abuse of detainees arrested for participating in peaceful demonstrations, or simply on the basis of their political beliefs, has been the result of “negligence” and “carelessness,” the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran said the abuse was systematic and reflected a policy of suppressing dissent, intimidating the population, and corroborating charges by producing false confessions.

“There should be prosecution of those responsible for torturing them, and for the shootings, beatings, and ill-treatment that have resulted in numerous deaths on the streets and in detention, “stated Aaron Rhodes, a spokesperson for the Campaign.
